About Tropical Fish Care Guide
Tropical Fish Care Guide was built so you can check fish care with a reason for every answer.
In this article (6 sections)
How is compatibility decided?
It is calculated from the care data of each species with fixed rules. Seven things are checked: temperature, water chemistry, whether a heater is needed, size, temperament, fin nipping and whether a fish eats shrimp.
- Pairs whose temperature ranges do not overlap are marked ×
- Pairs where one fish is small enough to fit in the other's mouth are marked ×
- A fin nipper with a long-finned fish is marked ×
- A fish that eats baby shrimp with shrimp is marked △
- A tropical fish with a fish that needs no heater (goldfish, medaka) is marked △
Pairs that the rules cannot settle are judged one by one from published sources, with the reason and the source shown. The results are a guide. Individual fish, tank size and the number of hiding places can change the outcome.
Who is Kou, our guide?
Kou is the shoebill character who shows you around this site. In the articles, Kou sums up tips and warnings in speech bubbles.
Kou: Knows everything. Sometimes writes things that are wrong. Sorry in advance.
Hi, I'm Kou. If you're in a hurry, just read my speech bubbles.
Where the information comes from
Fish databases (Seriously Fish, FishBase), university extension guides and care guides from aquarium manufacturers. Temperature and pH come from Seriously Fish, which is written for aquarium keeping. Where sources are thin, as with shrimp and snails, specialist shop guides fill the gaps and are named in the table sources. Anything that cannot be confirmed is left out.
